Deal with Rising Energy Costs
Deal with Rising Energy Costs
When you think about all the electrical appliances used in salons, it comes as no surprise that salon energy bills are through the roof. Washing machines, tumble dryers, hairdryers, curlers, straighteners etc are constantly running. This can result in a small salon using a whopping 7000 kWh of electricity each year. That is more than double the average UK household usage.
however, the leading UK organisations within hair, beauty and barbering have called for an energy bill rebate. Significantly, these organisations are highlighting to the government that rising energy costs could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back of the sector’s pandemic recovery.
Hairdressing Industry Support for Salons
The organisations pushing this campaign forward are
- The National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF),
- Hair & Barber Council,
- The British Association of Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology (BABTAC),
- British Beauty Council (BBCo),
- Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT), and
- UK Spa Association.
A sector survey on the current issue was carried out by the organisations. Certainly, feedback from 1744 salons found:
- 94% said utility bills have increased compared to last year.
- 41% said they had risen by 51-100% and 10% had risen by 101-200%.
- 82% have taken steps to reduce their energy costs – including turning down heating and closing the salon for a day a week to save costs.
- 47% have reduced other business costs to be able to afford increasing utility bills. Most by reducing stock purchasing and reducing wages.
